Why Geography Matters

For the AP Human Geography class, the summer assignment is centered around Harm de Blij’s (pronounced de Bley) book, Why Geography Matters: Three Challenges Facing America- Climate Change, The Rise of China, and Global Terrorism. LIke my students should be doing, I’m in the midst of reading this book as well.
I’m just short of halfway through and it is pretty interesting. It also is giving a good idea of how different this course will be from not just anything I’ve ever taught before, but from anything we’ve ever offered students at Wagner High School. Students have taken Earth Science classes, history classes, government courses, economics classes, and so on. Well, if you wrap all of them into one course, you get a sense of what this book is about and what the course will be like. All rather incredible actually.
I don’t want to write too much here just in case I give any answers away for the assignment. What I will say though, is this is a good book. At times it can be a touch dry, but overall Prof. de Blij is great at illustrating the role of geography in the shaping of our world- past, present, and future. As I complete the book over the next week or so, I’ll update this post.

So, if there was a summer assignment that I didn’t hear about, I assume I didn’t make it into the class. That’s a shame. I’ll probably get that book sometime soon, anyway. Looks interesting.
Hi Jacob,
I’m not sure if you are on the geography class list or not. If not, there will most likely be a chance to add the class in the fall- provided it doesn’t conflict with anything, especially band.
By the way, how did you find this site? I just put it up over the past couple of days?
I actually found it a month or so ago, when you just used it as your blog, and just happened to check back yesterday for the first time in a while.
Sorry to be bugging you so much about the class.
If you liked WGM, you may wish to know that Dr. De Blij’s most recent book, THE POWER OF PLACE, is now available at bookstores everywhere.
